The Necromancer’s Redemption Excerpt

I’m still somewhat dazed after completing my Necromancer Series trilogy, but the final book is out and here’s an excerpt depicting Ruby and Ewan’s mad dash to escape creatures in the demon realm. Enjoy!

“We need to move. We shouldn’t stand around in one spot for too long.”

I did my own scan of our area, suddenly anxious. “So where are we exactly?”

In response, a piteous howl sounded in the distance, and I cursed while a tremor rippled through me. That wasn’t the answer I was looking for.

Ewan grimaced. “These are the Myz forests. Consider it our version of Tolkien’s Mirkwood Forest.”

“Yea,” I said with mock enthusiasm. “I was hoping for another questionable, scary forest teeming with demon rejects.” Of course, of course the goddamn Death Cult Sanctuary had to be located in a place where demons avoided, where nameless beasts wandered, where I had to search for a questionable relic that may or may not rip my world apart.

Ewan took the lead and led us down a path thick with trees. Their roots protruded from the ground like tentacles of the Kraken itself, busting past the frothing waves. Branches swaying above us formed a canopy. Their thick foliage blocked out the daylight while the ground bore the wet smell of decaying organic matter. While this resembled a human jungle—on acid—experience had taught me that the next moment could introduce any number of strange creatures or flesh eating flora. The more I stared, flicking my gaze side to side, back and forward and up, the more I caught a shake of leaves or twinkle of orb-like lights.

To temper my nervousness, I broached the topic of Ivo and the fight. “Won’t Ivo seek us out when he finds out Damon is alive?”

“He won’t find out, not for a while. For all he knows, I delivered a fatal stab to Damon. Portia took Damon to the home of her allies where he can recover, buying us some time before Ivo discovers the truth.”

Or we’d all die and it wouldn’t matter.

Ewan slowed his pace and tightened his grip on his sword. He twisted his head back. I’d nipped at his heels as we walked, so much so that I plowed into his back when he stopped suddenly. He gazed intently at a spot in the thick cluster of trees beside us, drew closer and swiped at a bunch of moss, revealing a statue. Black lines ran like distended veins over the red stone figure. It loomed a good five feet taller than Ewan. As he cleared away more moss, I stood back and stared with dismay at the wolf-like statue, fangs extending from a long snout. It stood on hind legs held up by an almost human torso, and claws. Freakishly long claws.

“Is this a real creature?” I asked.

He tapped the edge of his sword on the torso. “These marks. These things were long thought extinct, but . . . ” He scanned the area again. “We should get to the Sanctuary.”

I gave the red, black smudges Ewan had pointed out one more look before taking off after him. “What are the marks?”

“Possibly a ritual to waken them from slumber. If they still exist that is.”

I glanced behind me again and resumed my position at his heels. And once again, I plowed into him. Damn it. “Can you please . . . ?”

He clamped a hand over my mouth, which really covered half my face. Continue reading

The Necromancer’s Redemption Release

It’s out! I’m honestly overwhelmed and amazed to have completed this trilogy. At times, it ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????made me cry, others, it made me laugh, and lots of times, made me pull my hair out. The best part however, was hearing from readers who loved the characters, especially Ruby, the necromancer. People seemed to appreciate her strong, independent nature without being a physically strong heroine. Ruby kicked ass in her loyalty and love for her friends, mental strength, and resiliency, even when she was literally going mad.

Find our more about The Necromancer’s Redemption on Amazon, and check out my Giveaway!

To celebrate my release, I’m offering a copy of my short story booklet, The Werewolf’s Devotion, (read about it here) and a $15 Amazon giftcard to one person who leaves a comment with their zombie name! I’m a Famished Flesh-eater!

Find your inner zombie here: http://www.playbuzz.com/epicreads10/what-type-of-zombie-are-you

I will choose one person via random.org at midnight EST Sunday (the 29th).

Is this the last we’ll see of our heroes? I don’t think so. I have some novella ideas simmering in my head, maybe even one featuring Kara and Jax 🙂 But first, I’d like to start on a new series, more of a supernatural thriller, dealing with voodoo, or the Orisha religion that originated with the Yoruba people in West Africa. I’m very excited about it. And, of course, my ongoing pirate historicals.

Don’t forget to check out my new release mailing list for information on new releases and sales on both series. Sign up here: http://eepurl.com/-rc6L

Character Meme Hop

I was tagged for this meme by fellow author and Paranormal Romantics author Veronica Scott. Thanks Veronica!!

The second book in my Necromancer Books, The Necromancer’s Betrayal, just released so I thought I’d share a little about my heroine. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?

My fictional character is Ruby Montagne, a necromancer.

When and where is the story set?

Necromancer’s Betrayal is set in both in modern day San Francisco with the occasional jaunt into the demon realm.

What should we know about him/her?

She’s a necromancer and can bring the dead back to life, make zombies and revenants and other, ah, interesting abilities.

What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?

Oh where to begin. Between the two supernatural men who desire her and the call to use her power for evil, and deciding who she can trust, Ruby has her hands full.

What is the personal goal of the character?

To discover who is killing off supernaturals, including her grandmother, and why, and understand her origins and that of necromancers. To learn a little more about Ruby’s struggles, here’s the back cover copy:

Necromancer Ruby Montagne is battling for her life in the realm of demons. Unfairly branded for the death of a fellow necromancer, she’s got to prove her innocence without the full use of her magic. And the real culprit is still on the loose.

While someone is stalking her friends among the witches, Ruby searches for answers inside the dark intrigues of both the demon and necromancer worlds. Ruby must confront this new, sinister threat while reconciling her feelings for her former lover, a demon warrior. Only it’s difficult . . . because a sexy vampire is making it clear that he’d like to be a lot more than just friends.

The competition for Ruby’s trust heats up as the enemy pushes her toward a dark side that could threaten the entire realm. Yet what can Ruby do when she’s not even sure what she is? With the fabric separating the realms at stake, she must decide whom to trust. But will the ultimate betrayal be her own?

I’ve tagged a couple of author friends with some great books to share. They’ll be posting in a week or two!

Excerpt

I particularly like this excerpt because it takes place in a demon realm version of a red light district and brings out a different side to some of the characters, such as Ewan. Tivor, a new ally, is a demon Chronicler or keeper of demon historical records. Enjoy!

Tivor turned down a less crowded, narrower passage, and if I’d hadn’t known better, I’d have said we’d entered a red light district of sorts, with demons stumbling about as if drunk. I raised an eyebrow at Ewan, and he just smiled and waved me onward. Tivor ducked into an opening in the rock. Damon had to bend almost ninety degrees to clear the entrance to what could only be a bar packed into a small cave, as dark and musty as an aged British pub. Stone benches lined the walls circling a stone pillar in the center out of which an enormous, multi-eyed, octopus-like creature served up drinks with his tentacles. I clasped Ewan’s arm. “Why is Cthulhu the bartender?” Continue reading

Special Guest Pamela Turner talks about her Exterminating Angel!

Today’s guest is Pamela Turner talking to us about her new release, Exterminating Angel. Check out the lovely cover below and excerpt!

AuthorPhoto_PamelaTurnerPlease tell us a little bit about yourself. Hobbies/interests? When did you start writing?

Hello! My name is Pamela Turner, and I’m a NTSB addict. Oh, wait. That’s not right. Let’s try this again. Paranormal/Dark Fiction author, whose secret weapon is invisibility and the power to charm cats 🙂 Hobbies/Interests include aviation (I took a few flying lessons), Tarot, photography, videography, old abandoned buildings, cemeteries, and yes, the NTSB.

How did you get the story idea for your current title?

Can’t say exactly what sparked the idea, but it was what would happen if an archangel unwittingly unleashed a demon upon a city? I wanted to write a character who was so devoted to duty, he didn’t care how he achieved it, only to find out he’d made a horrible mistake and had to deal with the consequences.

What has been one of your favorite characters to write?

Lucifer. In Exterminating Angel, he’s a mentor-type of character who cares deeply for his friends, but still manages to annoy them by working on a need-to-know basis. He’s not evil and is sincerely concerned with saving the city’s inhabitants. As for souls, he doesn’t bother. Souls don’t pay the bills. 🙂

What are your favorite movies?

Casablanca, Santa Sangre, Dementia-13, Children of Paradise, Ashes and Diamonds, Three Colors – Red, Three Colors – Blue, Dolls… Really, almost anything by Wajda or Kieslowski.

Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what?

To be honest, I can’t write with music. Too distracting. But I do have songs that inspire my stories. These include songs by Blutengel, Within Temptation, E-Nomine, etc. – European symphonic metal, gothic, and dark wave.

What books/authors have inspired your writing?

Stories and television shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Thriller, Night Gallery, Twilight Zone, and One Step Beyond. The Alfred Hitchcock suspense anthologies played a significant role in my writing suspense. I remember two stories in particular. One about a hardened executive who’s paralyzed, and his tears save his life. The other, about a young woman, traumatized by rape, who cried “That’s him!” to her husband when they were searching for her assailant. I don’t remember if he killed the man, but he certainly attacked him. The story was made all the more poignant when the woman then pointed to another man and cried out, “It’s him!” That and stories by Ida Chittum in her collection, Tales of Terror, particularly “The Haunted Well,” “The Twisting Wind,” and “Vision of Roses.”

What themes do you like to explore in your books?

I like to explore the issues of good and evil and twist preconceived notions. Obsession and vengeance also seem to be common themes throughout my work.

What is next? Any new titles we should be looking for?

I’ve written a spin off to Exterminating Angel called Hell on Earth and another angel paranormal, The Judas Dilemma. That, plus Serpent Fire, the second book in my Angels of Death series. They’re still works-in-progress.

They all sound great! Thanks for stopping by today 🙂

Exterminating Angel Blurb:Exterminating Angel, Pamela Turner

Making a deal with the Devil is the least of his problems.

Zaphkiel, a chain-smoking, hard-drinking archangel, never intended to unleash the sun demon upon the city. Bad enough his boss wants him dead, and this recent crime is the perfect excuse. The timing couldn’t be worse. Somehow, Zaphkiel’s executed lover, Caliel, is alive and reincarnated as Sean. Zaphkiel is thrilled to be reunited with Caliel again, but will his lover feel the same when he learns Zaphkiel’s darkest secret?

Hired by Lucifer, Sean wants nothing more than to fit in. But how can he compete when the Devil’s friends include archangels and a Tarot reader, and he was born without special abilities? Or so he believes. The Tarot hints there may be more to him than he realizes.

Recruited by the Devil to find the two pentacles sun demon Sorath plans to use to destroy the universe, Zaphkiel and Sean find themselves pawns in a game of power and control. If the archangel gives his boss the pentacles, Ophaniel will overlook his crime. But Zaphkiel knows he can’t trust either Ophaniel or Sorath, and the deal he’s made with the Devil could cost him not only his life, but also the lover he believed gone forever.

M/M sexual practices, occult themes, some violence, graphic descriptions.

Excerpt: (Please note contains language and some graphic imagery)

Zaphkiel could see why people called Eastern Cemetery haunted, given the high grass and overturned, broken tombstones. Clouds obscured the night sky, perfect cover for their midnight excursion. “Sense anything?”

“Something. But it’s weak.”

Zaphkiel recoiled at a bloody deer’s head jammed atop an obelisk. “What the fuck?”

Raziel drew a sharp breath. “Assholes.”

What sick mind would do this? Easy to say Satanists. More likely dumb-ass kids pretending to be devil worshippers.

Neither voiced the possibility Kurt might also be responsible. Continue reading

Another girl had been taken. One moment the small village of Volkzene was silent, with Redlynn drifting off to sleep to the rhythmical sounds of her clock ticking; the next a scream pierced the night.

Redlynn leapt from her bed, grabbed her sword, and tore out to the street. People in their nightclothes, brandishing torches and lanterns, filled the village center.

“Where are they?” she called at the nearest neighbor.

“Cantrel’s.” The woman ran for the safety of her home.

Anya! Redlynn sprinted toward the south edge of the village. Her best friend was on guard alone at the Cantrel’s hut. Breathing hard, the cold night wind whipped her wavy, red hair into her face and raised goose bumps on her skin. The sound of her blood pumping in her ears drowned out the buzz of the village folk.

“Anya,” she screamed. “Anya, where are you?”

Redlynn charged through the crowd gathered outside the hut. “Move,” she yelled. The other members of the Sisterhood and villagers backed away at the sight of her.

The smell of blood hit her. She stepped over the threshold, the horror slapping her with force. Her heart faltered and a cry escaped her lips.

“No-o-o-o!” she screamed. “Anya!” Continue reading

Excerpt:

Lying beside Nefer, my body aches for her sweet embrace. I am torn between desire and blissfulness. To take her into my arms, to have her kiss upon my lips, to feel the joys of our flesh united together is tamed by the pure innocence sleeping peacefully beside me.  I know she is tired and worthy of a full uninterrupted night’s sleep. I take refuge in knowing there will be many nights to come where I can indulge in my erotic fantasies, for she will be with me for all my days to come.

Like I have so many nights before, I find myself lying awake contemplating my life. I laugh quietly at the answers I have received on my reflections; they are so different than they have been in the past. No longer are my thoughts filled with grander or a future designed by others. Looking around, I see the simplicity in what I have and what makes me truly happy. The rich furnishings I have always possessed are replaced with a tattered roof and a straw bed on the floor. A drink of spring water fills the emptiness of my stomach and the woman sleeping next to me fills the void in my heart.

Quietly, I get up and step outside where I fall to my knees under the star lit sky. I look up and like a child, the tears flow down my cheeks, cleansing what is left of my emotional soul. Like a snake that is shedding its skin, I bare myself to my ancestors and thank the Gods for this great revelation; I need nothing more than I have right now. For the first time in my life, I feel complete; totally and unequivocally complete.

V.S. NelsonAbout VS:

Being a Native American woman and a Scorpio, author V.S. Nelson has always had a fondness for history, mythology, the occult, and the unexplained events which have occurred on this world we call home. It was no wonder she found herself writing a paranormal series.

Raised on authors like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne and coming from a long line of oral storytellers, Ms. Nelson work has been defined as innovative and fresh. She will take you by the hand and lead you into the depths of her imagination as if you are sitting next to her on the couch one minute and alive within her fantasy world the next.

She has always enjoyed reading stories with strong relationships and happy-ever-after-endings and it is reflected in her work. Even her commercial fiction, Sins of a Man, the Memoirs of a Mafia Hit man, is layered with romantic elements. I’ve heard her say she is in love with love more than once and that too is echoed in her stories.

Landing in Arizona, after an exciting teaching career, which took her to the Middle East for several years, she lives in Arizona where she spends most of her time making love to her computer while writing, editing or researching, seven to ten hours a day. The days she’s not writing, you will find her with her critique partners, attending or presenting a workshop or at a RWA (Romance Writers of America) meeting. She’s extremely active in three RWA chapters in addition to her other associations.

Check out the first three books in the series on VS Nelson’s Amazon page.

Excerpt:

…It wasn’t Luke but a long, drawn-out shriek that brought Abigail thumping back to consciousness, her heart hammering triple time in her chest. Eyes wide and staring against the darkness, she warded herself just in time. Strong magic battered her. She tried to sense Luke, but that was the problem with wards. They protected by forming an impenetrable barrier and corralled her magic inside.

Whatever was pummeling her seemed to have given up. She risked chinking enough of a hole in her warding to send a tendril of magic outward because she needed information. When it came, it terrified her so badly, her heart stuttered. Dark things surrounded them: wraiths, mad wolves—those who’d been turned to serve the other side—and humans who’d sold their immortal souls for forbidden knowledge. Had the girl rallied them? How could she possibly be that powerful? Luke didn’t seem to be anywhere. Abigail hoped he’d concealed himself out of harm’s way, because the two of them couldn’t make the slightest dent in the dark horde outside. The stagecoach rocked and she realized someone was climbing onto the roof. Throat so dry she could barely breathe, she mended her warding.

The books. That’s what they want… Let them haul the miserable things out of here. She knew she should risk heaven and hell to keep such knowledge out of dark hands, but Abigail didn’t see how throwing her life away would alter the outcome. She heard voices speaking the Satanic tongue, and then dragging sounds as someone transferred the trunk to the ground. Luke shouldn’t have bothered to put it back up top, she thought grimly. New Release, Portents

Happy Halloween!! I’m pleased to feature the new release of Shanyn Hosier’s second book in the Amanda Ryder V.I. series, Portents. I had the luck of reading Portents before its release and you won’t be disappointed. Shanyn creates an interesting world with her paranormal characters and their powers, and her characterizations are top notch!

Portents, Amanda Ryder V.I. series, Shanyn HosierWhen all signs point to trouble, can Amanda steer clear of disaster?

Amanda Ryder’s determined never to fail her coven again. Next time, she won’t hesitate to pull the trigger to defend her friends. If only they’d trust her enough to let her set foot outside the Academy…

Frustrated and itching to prove herself, Amanda snags her first Academy mission: she and Toby Laboyteaux, fellow teen witch who “kinda sorta sees the future,” must work together to track down a local swamp monster stirring up trouble in the sticks. But overturned suburban garbage cans and blurry tabloid pictures aren’t the only problems—strained relationships with her new colleagues, a growing guilt-complex, and the waxing moon all add to Amanda’s stress. Add to that the pressure of being hunted by a psychic psychopath, and Amanda’s got plenty on her mind.

Meanwhile, Hamilton Nash swears Marian Dupree and her Academy of bumbling do-gooders have thwarted his plans for the last time. Convinced Amanda’s the subject of his mother’s recent prophecy and the key to his future success, he redoubles his efforts to obtain the mystery girl. But when Amanda proves too slippery a quarry, Nash sets his sights on the next best thing. When a valuable member of the Academy coven is kidnapped, Amanda and her friends are in a race against time. Is a tragic future destined to come to pass?

Shanyn Hosier, Desert MenageAbout Shanyn: Born and raised in small-town, rural Indiana, I now live in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona with an intimidatingly smart and devastatingly handsome husband and two hyperactively cute and talented sons who will one day be Earth’s Overlords (never underestimate the power of Legos). I enjoy cooking, traveling, gardening, sewing, quilting, and embroidery but only when I’m in the right mood and seldom concurrently (I’m kind of streaky when it comes to hobbies).
